Mid-Century Sprinter

Mid-Century Sprinter

IN PROGRESS

The Mid-Century Sprinter project: refurbishment & redesign of a vintage sprinter van originally manufactured in the 1970s.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

2020

The client wanted a liveable, comfortable, & inspiring space for long trips on the road. The Mid-Century Sprinter design brings in modern amenities and contemporary minimalism, while honoring the dynamic spirit of the 70s era. Custom built pieces allow for a highly functional space personalized for the client’s unique interests – including morning yoga and live DJ mixing.

Storable pieces create an easy, chic dining area without consuming space. Each item has a specific, fixed place to call home within the interior of the van, to keep the things tidy on the road and ensure security when driving on more adventurous paths. This area doubles as a yoga studio for morning Vinyasa or evening Yin, an inclusion that was important to the client.

The Kitchenette is updated with modern (& space savvy) appliances; along with a new double length window to bring in light, open air, and allow passengers to take in a wider breadth of the sights on scenic routes. Above window shelving includes fixtures to keep cooking gear in place, saving counter space for preparing meals. An additional extendable counter top folds down and locks into place when not in use.

The client wanted to have an area to work on music sets on the road, as well as entertain guests with live mixes. The multi-use layout creates a no-fuss, secure storage fix for the client’s DJ equipment, while simultaneously providing an easy & enjoyable environment for working on their music.

Smart storage is imperative in any design, and especially paramount in smaller spaces. For the Mid-Century Sprinter design, we included a sleek sliding cabinet & fold out counter top as part of a custom-built, mounted unit – a contemporary take on the lush mid-century aesthetic.

A custom built wall divider in the phenomenal style of classic vintage mid-century pieces accomplishes a separation of the driver’s space from the living areas. The etagere design creates possibilities for storage while maintaining a feeling of openness inside the objectively small space.

In keeping with the space conscious theme of the sprinter’s design, a full sized bed folds into a sofa, which includes storage for keeping bedding & linens organized. Opposite the sofa-bed, mounted cabinetry offers additional storage as well as an access point to a flatscreen affixed to cabinet door – a simple pleasure on the road, and an important item on the client’s wishlist.
